My top 10 musical movies of all time in no particular order

  • Honorable mention- Coal Miner's Daughter. Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones were excellent!
  • 1. Fame: I always loved this movie. I remember seeing it and being in awe that there were actually high school where artsy kids could go and just doing their thing. It kind of blew my mind in a good way! Loved Irene Cara singing "Out Here On my Own". And Debbie Allen was so fierce! Loved this one.....maybe the most!
  • 3. Lady Sings the Blues- The Diva Diana Ross did her thing in this one. I know it was believed that she could not portray Ms Billie Holiday and that she would be a laughing stock- but Ms. Ross proved all of her critics so very wrong! All they could do was look silly when she picked up that Oscar nomination for best actress! You know what they say...Success is the best Revenge!
  • 2. Ray- This was such an excellent movie. Jamie.....damn! He just became Ray. Excellent writing and acting. The Best. I don't know what else to say, but can I just say that everyone was perfectly casted and they really worked together so very well.
  • 4. The Wizard of OZ/ The Wiz: Loved both stories. I can watch them over and over and never get bored.
  • 5. Grease- I will always love this movie. I am not ashamed to say that I had the soundtrack and I knew all of the words. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized that all of the actors were closer to 30 than 18!
  • 6. Chicago- Again, all of the actors nailed their parts. I'm always very pleased when I am surprised and I was tickled that the Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellwegger, Richard Gere and Queen Latifah (I actually knew that she could sing from her rap songs) were singing their own songs. And they look like they had alot of fun making it!
  • 7.Carmen: A Hip Hop Opera/ Carmen Jones: I loved both of these adaptations! The original Carmen is just a classic with Dorothy Dandridge and Mr.(FINE) Harry Belafonte. Kudows to Ms. Dandridge for snagging the Oscar Nomination for best Actress!!! I loved Carmen (Hip Hop) because I just thought that it was pretty darn clever of them to take a classic and make it modern. Overall, it made me smile!
  • 8. Dreamgirls: I was a little concerned when they decided to make this play into a movie, but man did they pull it off! The casting was great and I was just generally impressed with the whole thing. Loved it!
  • 9. West Side Story: This movie is still one of my favorites. Although there are parts and songs that I don't care for (can get boring), for the most part, the dance scenes are the bizness and I will always get up and sing along with "I like to be in America, okay by me in America". So, if Im still singing it after all these years, thats a good thing!
  • 10. Sparkle: Okay, I have loved this movie every since I was a little girl. They need to do an update. I heard talk of a remake being done with Beyonce (surprise) as Sister! But even if they do an update, they have to keep Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack in it, otherwise it will lose it's flavor!

My favorite CD right now!

  • I'm really digging Estelle's CD "SHINE". This CD is the Bizness! It seems like Ms. Estelle has gotten some airplay, but clearly, she has not gotten the recognition that she deserves! My favorite cut is the fourth track "More Than Friends" where I am definitely feeling the sample of Aretha Franklin's "Bridge over Troubled Water". Favorite line of this track...."Don't play me like an extra, I got speaking roles, I am not that ho....I am so much more"! Loving her for that! She has a couple of songs that have that Reggae flavor which I definitely can appreciate. Good job girl! Just wanted to give a shout out!
